Primo Levi

In the mountains with Alberto Salmoni

Primo Levi

After a long odyssey he returned to Turin in October 1945. In 1947 he published the first edition of “Se questo è un uomo” (If this is a man/Survival in Auschwitz) in which he described his experience as a deportee. The book would obtain success only when published by Einaudi in 1958. Since then, Primo Levi has become one of the best known writers on the Shoah and one of the foremost witnesses of it. Nevertheless, he continued to work as a chemist, working only part-time as a writer until the 1970s when he devoted himself entirely to literature. His last work, “The Drowned and the Saved” is one of the greatest reflections on the concentration camp experience.
He died in Turin in April 1987.
